5 Reasons You Can’t Sell Your Used Luxury Goods.

So you've tried selling your used luxury goods?

A high end sofa maybe, a luxury bag, or a luxury watch perhaps. Whatever it is - you want to ensure that you're not waiting around for an age for them to sell.

Whether you're still in the thinking phase or you've taken the first steps in the journey - you'll need to follow some basic guidelines :

Now the same principles apply whatever you're selling. Be faithful to the numerous variables and you’ll be on your way to securing a cool sale. We've narrowed the list down to the most important factors :

1). Nobody can see what you're selling

Make sure that what you’re selling is prominent. Imagine you have a valuable painting - you love it so much - that your desire is for everyone that visits your home admires its beauty with you. So you place it inside a duvet cover & hang it on the wall! Though the analogy may sound a little silly.. it’s akin to the actions of many who attempt to sell used luxury goods by listing it for sale in a place only they will see it.

The platform you use to sell your luxury goods is as important as the luxury goods itself. Imagine you couldn't see this blog post.. it might as well not exist right, at least as far as you’re concerned. If nobody can see what you're selling there doesn't leave much chance for it to be bought.

2). It's unclear what you're selling

Imagine you were face-to-face with someone looking for exactly what you have. How would you best communicate that you have what they're looking for? You don't need to turn into salesperson of the month, but you do need to convince them that you have what they want.

Remember, with luxury goods, purchases are often based on wants and not needs so you likely won’t need expert sales skills.

If you’re writing a sales description yourself - answer these points clearly and concisely :

  • Is it comfortable to use?

  • Is there any cosmetic damage (cracks, scratches, tears, dents, rips, scuffs, holes, fading, dog hair, cigarette smoke odour)

  • What's the reason for the sale?

  • Is the item 6 months, 2 years, 5 years old etc, is it a vintage piece - what year?

3). Your asking price is too high

You can underprice a thing & watch it fly within hours - but overpricing can have it sit around for months.

This is another factor that gets people stuck with their stuff. The laws of supply & demand will always play a role in how much you can price your goods - be sure to check what like-for-like goods are selling for online and use this to your advantage.

Now we get it, you paid a lot of money for it just over a year ago, but the same principles apply universally : once goods have become the title of the consumer - the price drops. Price your used luxury goods reasonably.

4). You've taken poor images (🙁)

A common factor really. First thing's first - your device. You won't get very far using a phone 7 models old - ensure you're using something up-to-date. The quality of the camera on your device has a direct impact on how quickly your items sell. Take 5 - 6 images of the goods in question, ensure you get different angles & ranges. By this we mean close-up shots along with the standard distanced shots. Take out any intruding objects in the shot which are unrelated to what you're selling.

5). You haven't even included images (shakes head)

This point should’ve probably come before the last one but it's just as relevant nonetheless. Images are probably the single most important factor in selling anything - especially used goods - so never forget it. To not include images, is like creating a painting without a paintbrush, or better still, creating a painting with a paintbrush - but no paint! Often times you'll find that images alone are enough evidence for some to make that buying decision.
